東海道五十三次

1832年、歌川広重は江戸と京都を結ぶ大動脈、東海道を旅し、日本美術で最も愛される連作を持ち帰った。「東海道五十三次」(保永堂版、1833–34年)は壁に掛けられる旅そのものである——夜明けの橋を渡る人足、突然の雨に身をかがめる旅人、夜の雪に眠る宿場町。広重が描いた天候はそれ自体が主題であり、雨も霧も夕闇も、かつて誰も描いたことのない筆致で刷られた。宿場を一つずつ辿るもよし、あなただけの三宿を選ぶもよし。すべての道には宿場がある。
