1820年代末、若き国芳は百八人の豪傑を描いた中国の小説を、一大センセーションへと変えた。「通俗水滸伝豪傑百八人之一個」(1827–30年頃)は暴力と装飾に満ちている——梁を組んで格闘し、水中で戦い、伝説を肌に刻んだ盗賊たち。この連作は英雄全身像という新形式を生み、江戸の刺青文化(まさにこれらの図柄を手本とした)を育て、国芳の名を不動のものにした。この家で最も声高な版画たちであり、彼ら自身それを知っている。
