月百姿

月岡芳年は古典の伝統を、その最も幽玄な連作で締めくくった。「月百姿」(1885–92年)はただ一つの規則——すべての図に月が宿ること——を百通りに変奏する。合戦前に笛を吹く武将、流謫の宮廷女性、冬枯れの草むらで鳴く狐。日本が電化し、木版の工房が次々と閉じていく中で描かれたこの連作は、集大成であり、同時に告別でもある。愛好家たちはこれを一篇の長い詩として味わう。どこから始めても、月はどの一枚にも同じように在る。
