武蔵野の広大な草原に、一匹の狐が、満月の下、秋草の間にたたずんでいる。
なぜ重要か
芳年最晩年、連作の終わりに近い時期に手がけられた一図である。九十余りの月を経て、帝、歌人、亡霊たちを描いてきた末に、もっとも静かな一図が、月を一匹の獣とひとつの何もない原野に委ねている。
注目すべき点
ここでは意図的に、ほとんど何も起こらない——原野、草、狐、月。この狐は、日本の伝承に登場する古の変化(へんげ)の妖狐が、ただの狐であることに休んでいる姿である。
「原野は空である。狐と月とが、それを独り占めしている。」
