The Tōkaidō Road
In 1832 Utagawa Hiroshige traveled the Tōkaidō, the great coastal road between Edo and Kyōto, and came back with the most beloved series in Japanese art. The Fifty-three Stations (Hōeidō edition, 1833–34) is a journey you can hang on a wall: porters crossing the bridge at dawn, travelers bent under sudden rain, a village asleep in night snow. Hiroshige’s weather is the subject — he printed rain, mist, and dusk as no one had. Walk it station by station, or choose the three that are yours. Every road has its stations.
