The New Print

The woodblock workshops did not die with the Meiji era — they were reborn. From the 1910s the publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō rebuilt the old system — artist, carver, printer, publisher — around a new generation: Hashiguchi Goyō’s monumental beauties, Kawase Hasui’s snow-hushed temples, Yoshida Hiroshi’s luminous harbors. Shin-hanga, the new print, kept the craft and changed the light. This collection holds designs published through 1930 — every sheet cleared by publication year in our registry — from the movement’s first, finest years.
