One Hundred Views of Edo
At the end of his life, Hiroshige turned his weather-eye on his own city. One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (1856–58) is bold where the Tōkaidō was gentle: vertical sheets, startling croppings, a bridge caught mid-downpour, a plum branch thrust across the whole frame. When these prints reached Europe they detonated — Van Gogh copied Sudden Shower over Shin-Ōhashi and Plum Park in Kameido stroke for stroke in oil, and Western painting learned a new way to see. The city is gone; the seeing remains.
