One Hundred Famous Views of Edo

Fukagawa Susaki and Jūmantsubo

深川洲崎十万坪 · Fukagawa Susaki Jūmantsubo

Utagawa Hiroshige · 1857

What it is

An eagle plunges through the winter sky over the Jūmantsubo marshland at the city’s eastern edge, wings filling the top of the sheet, the snow-covered flats empty all the way to Mount Tsukuba.

Why it matters

The boldest aerial view in the series — Hiroshige hangs the viewer in the sky beside the bird, a vantage no one in Edo had ever occupied, over a landscape scoured nearly empty.

What to notice

Below the eagle’s tucked talons, almost nothing: white marsh, dark water, and a single wooden pail adrift at the bottom of the sheet — the one trace of the human city.

Winter empties the marsh. The hunter stays.

Impression note. The heavy bokashi that darkens the top of the sky above the eagle is wiped by hand and varies sheet to sheet; fine impressions keep the bird’s plumage dense and black against it. Impression variance is real — printings differ in wiping and fading — and choosing the finest openly held impression is the curatorial act.
