The Floating World

Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjūrokkei)

Groups of Mountain Climbers

Shojin tozan

Katsushika Hokusai · c. 1830–32

Pilgrims crowd into a cave near the summit and climb the red slopes above it: here the series stands on the mountain instead of looking at it.

Fuji carried religious meaning long before Hokusai, and in the last of the ten added designs he shows the people who climbed it for that reason.

There is no cone of Fuji anywhere on the sheet; the mountain is the ground the figures lean against.

Up close, the holy mountain is rock, weather and other people.

The series sold well and was printed in large numbers. The first sheets lean on the newly imported Prussian blue, outlines included; later printings add colours and soften the key block. This is the largest clean open impression of the design the Met holds.
