The Floating World

Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjūrokkei)

Cushion Pine at Aoyama

Aoyama enza no matsu

Katsushika Hokusai · c. 1830–32

A great pine trained into a low, rounded mass fills the hillside at Aoyama in Edo, visitors climb past it, and Fuji stands white in the distance.

Hokusai lets a single garden tree outweigh the mountain completely, and the series is full of such reversals of scale.

The pine is one dome of green and the mountain a small triangle of paper beside it; the two shapes answer each other across the sheet.

A city garden can hold a shape as large in the eye as a volcano.

The series sold well and was printed in large numbers. The first sheets lean on the newly imported Prussian blue, outlines included; later printings add colours and soften the key block. This is the largest clean open impression of the design the Met holds.
