Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjūrokkei)
Surugadai in Edo
Tōto Sundai
Katsushika Hokusai · c. 1830–32
Travellers climb and descend a steep slope at Surugadai in Edo, and Fuji appears in the open gap below the hill.
Hokusai uses the slope itself as the frame, so the mountain is seen past the shoulders of people going about their day.
The figures on the slope are cut by the edge of the hill, and the mountain sits in a hollow of open air.
The city’s hills were also its viewing places.

The series sold well and was printed in large numbers. The first sheets lean on the newly imported Prussian blue, outlines included; later printings add colours and soften the key block. This is the largest clean open impression of the design the Met holds.
