満開の牡丹の上を、一羽の蝶が風に逆らって羽ばたく。花は茎の上で大きくしなり、花弁も葉も同じ突風の中を流れてゆく。
なぜ重要か
富士山シリーズと同じ時期、七十代の北斎は花に目を向け、そこに天候を与えた——これらは植物図譜ではなく、一つの出来事である。
注目すべき点
蝶は花を撓ませる風に逆らって飛ぶ——画面全体を貫く大きな流れに対して、一つの小さな意志が立ち向かっている。
