Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjūrokkei)
Noboto Bay
Noboto no ura
Katsushika Hokusai · c. 1830–32
Shellfish gatherers work the shallows at Noboto Bay beneath two torii gates standing in the water, and Fuji appears between them.
Hokusai uses the shrine gates as a frame, one of the many ways the series puts the mountain inside something.
The posts of the torii are planted in the water itself, and the figures stoop among them.
The gate to the shrine is also the frame for the mountain.

The series sold well and was printed in large numbers. The first sheets lean on the newly imported Prussian blue, outlines included; later printings add colours and soften the key block. This is the largest clean open impression of the design the Met holds.
