The Floating World

Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjūrokkei)

At Sea off Kazusa

Kazusa no kairo

Katsushika Hokusai · c. 1830–32

A big sailing ship runs before the wind off Kazusa, and far beyond its rigging a very small Fuji stands on the horizon.

Hokusai often hid the mountain inside the working world. Here the whole subject of the series is a speck that the ship’s ropes frame.

Follow the rigging down from the mast: the lines close around the distant mountain like the frame of a window.

The largest thing in the picture is passing through, and the smallest is the one that stays.

The series sold well and was printed in large numbers. The first sheets lean on the newly imported Prussian blue, outlines included; later printings add colours and soften the key block. This is the largest clean open impression of the design the Met holds.
