The Floating World

Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjūrokkei)

The Waterwheel at Onden

隠田の水車 · Onden no suisha

Katsushika Hokusai · c. 1830–32

What it is

Water pours from a big wheel at Onden, near Edo, while women wash in the stream below and Fuji stands beyond the slope.

Why it matters

Hokusai draws the moving water with more care than the mountain, and the sheet is about the stream as much as the view.

What to notice

The stream below the wheel is drawn in long, braided lines, like strands of hair.

The work of water beside the stillness of the mountain.

Impression note. The series sold well and was printed in large numbers. The first sheets lean on the newly imported Prussian blue, outlines included; later printings add colours and soften the key block. This is the largest clean open impression of the design the Met holds. Impression variance is real — printings differ in wiping and fading — and choosing the finest openly held impression is the curatorial act.
