The Floating World

Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjūrokkei)

Fine Wind, Clear Morning (Red Fuji)

凱風快晴 · Gaifū kaisei

Katsushika Hokusai · c. 1830–32

What it is

A south wind and a clear dawn: Fuji flushed red from forest to summit, the last snow streaking its peak, mackerel clouds combed across the blue.

Why it matters

The series' second icon and the Great Wave's opposite — no boats, no storm, no people, only the mountain answering the light. It fixed Fuji's image for the world.

What to notice

The forest at the mountain's foot is not drawn but stippled — a band of dark green laid like moss; above it the whole design is three colors holding one another in balance.

"One mountain, one wind, one morning. It is enough."

Impression note. Printings range from the soft rose of the earliest "pink Fuji" impressions to the saturated brick-red of later editions; the sky's graded blue band is wiped by hand and differs sheet to sheet. Impression variance is real — printings differ in wiping and fading — and choosing the finest openly held impression is the curatorial act.
