Tenpōzan at the Mouth of the Aji River in Settsu Province

Sesshū Ajikawaguchi Tenpōzan

Katsushika Hokusai · c. 1830 (date of the series; the Met record gives only the artist’s dates)

What it is

A small island with cherry trees and visitors sits at the mouth of the Aji River in Settsu, with boats moored alongside and a bridge crossing to it.

Why it matters

Hokusai shows Tenpōzan as a place for an outing, small and green at the edge of the river mouth.

What to notice

The island is round and tidy, almost toy-like, and the boats line up around its edge.

A small hill by the water is enough for a holiday.

Impression note. A horizontal ōban, about 26 by 38 cm on the Met record. The bridges are drawn in fine, exact lines against broad fields of colour, and a clean impression keeps every plank and rail distinct. This is the largest clean open impression of the design the Met holds. Impression variance is real — printings differ in wiping and fading — and choosing the finest openly held impression is the curatorial act.
