Old View of the Boat-bridge at Sano in Kōzuke Province

Kōzuke Sano funabashi no kozu

Katsushika Hokusai · c. 1830

What it is

A bridge of boats lashed side by side crosses the river at Sano in Kōzuke under snow, with travellers and horses picking their way over.

Why it matters

Like the Yatsuhashi sheet, its title calls it an old view, a place remembered as much as visited.

What to notice

The boats curve across the river in a long arc, and snow covers the banks and roofs.

In winter the bridge is a row of small boats holding hands.

Impression note. A horizontal ōban, about 26 by 38 cm on the Met record. The bridges are drawn in fine, exact lines against broad fields of colour, and a clean impression keeps every plank and rail distinct. This is the largest clean open impression of the design the Met holds. Impression variance is real — printings differ in wiping and fading — and choosing the finest openly held impression is the curatorial act.
