Kintai Bridge in Suō Province

Suō no kuni Kintaibashi

Katsushika Hokusai · 1827–30

What it is

The Kintai Bridge in Suō leaps across the river in five wooden arches, with hills behind and travellers crossing.

Why it matters

Hokusai lets the run of arches fill the sheet from edge to edge.

What to notice

The arches rise and fall in a regular rhythm, like a row of waves made of timber.

A bridge built as a sequence of leaps.

Impression note. A horizontal ōban, about 26 by 38 cm on the Met record. The bridges are drawn in fine, exact lines against broad fields of colour, and a clean impression keeps every plank and rail distinct. This is the largest clean open impression of the design the Met holds. Impression variance is real — printings differ in wiping and fading — and choosing the finest openly held impression is the curatorial act.
