The Floating World

Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjūrokkei)

Viewing the Sunset over Ryōgoku Bridge from the Onmayagashi Embankment

御厩川岸より両国橋夕陽見 · Onmayagashi yori Ryōgokubashi yūhi mi

Katsushika Hokusai · c. 1830–32

What it is

A crowded ferry crosses the Sumida at dusk from the Onmaya embankment, Ryōgoku Bridge stretches across the river beyond, and Fuji is dark against the evening sky.

Why it matters

Hokusai catches the end of the day as people head home, with the mountain gone to silhouette.

What to notice

The ferry’s passengers sit packed together, and the long line of the bridge runs across the sheet behind them.

The day ends on the water, and everyone faces the same way.

Impression note. The series sold well and was printed in large numbers. The first sheets lean on the newly imported Prussian blue, outlines included; later printings add colours and soften the key block. This is the largest clean open impression of the design the Met holds. Impression variance is real — printings differ in wiping and fading — and choosing the finest openly held impression is the curatorial act.
