The Floating World

Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjūrokkei)

Inume Pass in Kai Province

甲州犬目峠 · Kōshū Inume-tōge

Katsushika Hokusai · c. 1830–32

What it is

Packhorse drivers climb the switchbacked ridge toward Inume Pass; the trail folds back on itself, and Fuji rises full-height beyond the valley.

Why it matters

Kai Province's inland Fuji — seen not from the sea or the city but from the working road over the mountains: a view a traveler earned on foot.

What to notice

The path's zigzag makes a slow ascent your eye can walk; Fuji's slope answers it in a single unbroken line.

"The pass is climbed in switchbacks. The mountain was drawn in one line."

Impression note. Printings differ in the depth of the sky's blue band and the greens of the ridge; a fine impression keeps the travelers and packhorses sharp against the graded slope. Impression variance is real — printings differ in wiping and fading — and choosing the finest openly held impression is the curatorial act.
