The Floating World

Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjūrokkei)

The Lake at Hakone in Sagami Province

相州箱根湖水 · Sōshū Hakone kosui

Katsushika Hokusai · c. 1830–32

What it is

Green mountains rise in stylised, interlocking forms around the lake at Hakone, and Fuji stands small and white beyond them.

Why it matters

Hokusai draws the hills around the lake almost as pattern, a flat and decorative answer to the mountain beyond.

What to notice

The hills are flat bands of colour fitted together like pieces of a puzzle, with very little drawn detail.

A wild range of hills becomes a calm design.

Impression note. The series sold well and was printed in large numbers. The first sheets lean on the newly imported Prussian blue, outlines included; later printings add colours and soften the key block. This is the largest clean open impression of the design the Met holds. Impression variance is real — printings differ in wiping and fading — and choosing the finest openly held impression is the curatorial act.
