The Floating World

Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjūrokkei)

Fuji Seen in the Distance from the Senju Pleasure Quarter

従千住花街眺望の不二 · Senju kagai yori chōbō no Fuji

Katsushika Hokusai · c. 1830–32

What it is

A procession of men on foot and on horseback passes along an embankment near the Senju quarter, under a thatched roof, with Fuji small in the distance.

Why it matters

One of the ten added designs, it looks toward the mountain from Senju, a post town on the roads out of Edo.

What to notice

The figures move in a steady line one way while the eye is pulled the other, out across the fields to the mountain.

Everyone in the picture is going somewhere, and the mountain is the one place no one is heading.

Impression note. The series sold well and was printed in large numbers. The first sheets lean on the newly imported Prussian blue, outlines included; later printings add colours and soften the key block. This is the largest clean open impression of the design the Met holds. Impression variance is real — printings differ in wiping and fading — and choosing the finest openly held impression is the curatorial act.
