The Floating World

Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjūrokkei)

Fuji from Gotenyama at Shinagawa on the Tōkaidō

東海道品川御殿山の不二 · Tōkaidō Shinagawa Gotenyama no Fuji

Katsushika Hokusai · c. 1830–32

What it is

Cherry trees in full blossom crown the hill at Gotenyama, picnickers gather under them, and Fuji appears across the water beyond.

Why it matters

One of the ten designs added after the series’ first success, it puts the mountain behind a spring crowd at Shinagawa, on the Tōkaidō out of Edo.

What to notice

The blossom is printed as soft clouds of pink, and the mountain sits in the gap between two of them.

Spring is a crowd on a hill, and the mountain waits at the edge of it.

Impression note. The series sold well and was printed in large numbers. The first sheets lean on the newly imported Prussian blue, outlines included; later printings add colours and soften the key block. This is the largest clean open impression of the design the Met holds. Impression variance is real — printings differ in wiping and fading — and choosing the finest openly held impression is the curatorial act.
