The Floating World

Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjūrokkei)

Dawn at Isawa in Kai Province

甲州伊沢暁 · Kōshū Isawa no akatsuki

Katsushika Hokusai · c. 1830–32

What it is

Travellers leave a thatched post town at Isawa before full light and cross a bridge, while Fuji stands pale over the river mist.

Why it matters

This is one of the ten designs added after the first thirty-six sold so well that the publisher, Nishimura, kept the series going.

What to notice

The town is still in shadow while the mountain has already caught the morning; the light reaches Fuji first.

The day begins at the summit and works its way down to the road.

Impression note. The series sold well and was printed in large numbers. The first sheets lean on the newly imported Prussian blue, outlines included; later printings add colours and soften the key block. This is the largest clean open impression of the design the Met holds. Impression variance is real — printings differ in wiping and fading — and choosing the finest openly held impression is the curatorial act.
