The Floating World

A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces (Shokoku taki meguri)

Yōrō Waterfall in Mino Province

Mino no Yōrō no taki

Katsushika Hokusai · c. 1832

The Yōrō Waterfall in Mino drops in a tall vertical curtain into a pool, while a woodcutter and visitors stand small at its foot.

Hokusai runs the water almost the full height of the sheet, and the figures are left a sliver of ground at the bottom.

The fall is a long column of white edged with blue, and the rocks beside it are dark and rounded.

Standing at the foot of falling water, everyone looks small.

A vertical ōban, about 37 by 26 cm on the Met record. Hokusai’s falling water is carved as long, separate lines, and a clean impression keeps them unbroken from the lip of the fall to the pool. This is the largest clean open impression of the design the Met holds.
