A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces (Shokoku taki meguri)

Rōben Waterfall at Ōyama in Sagami Province

Sōshū Ōyama Rōben no taki

Katsushika Hokusai · c. 1827 (date on the Met record)

Bathers stand beneath the slender Rōben Waterfall at Ōyama in Sagami, a few bare figures under the stream.

Where the other sheets show people looking at water, this one shows them standing in it.

The fall is a thin white ribbon, and the bathers beneath it are almost lost in its spray.

Some come to look at the waterfall, and some come to stand under it.

A vertical ōban, about 37 by 26 cm on the Met record. Hokusai’s falling water is carved as long, separate lines, and a clean impression keeps them unbroken from the lip of the fall to the pool. This is the largest clean open impression of the design the Met holds.
