The Floating World
The Wetterhorn
Yoshida Hiroshi · 1925
What it is
The Wetterhorn in the Swiss Alps rises above a farm and a blossoming tree, drawn by a Japanese mountaineer and cut and printed in the old way.
Why it matters
The first seventeen prints from Yoshida’s own studio, founded in 1925, all showed places outside Japan, and his Europe series began that same year.
What to notice
The snowfield is bare paper, and the tree in the foreground is small against the peak.
A climber’s view of a mountain far from home.

Impression note. From the print collection of the Swiss National Library, through Wikimedia Commons. The snowfield is left as bare paper, so the sheet’s own tone is part of the picture. Impression variance is real — printings differ in wiping and fading — and choosing the finest openly held impression is the curatorial act.
