One Hundred Famous Views of Edo
View from Massaki of the Suijin Shrine, Uchigawa Inlet and Sekiya
真崎辺より水神の森内川関屋の里を見る図 · Massaki atari yori Suijin no mori Uchigawa Sekiya no sato wo miru zu
Utagawa Hiroshige · 1857, 8th month
What it is
Through a round window at Massaki, the view opens over the Sumida River to the grove of the Suijin Shrine, with Mount Tsukuba on the horizon and plum blossom in front.
Why it matters
Hiroshige frames the river view through the round window of a house, a viewing place built into the design.
What to notice
The circle of the window cuts the river, the grove and the far mountain into a round picture of its own.
A house can be built around its view.

Impression note. Published 1856–59 in the vertical format Hiroshige had first used for his Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces, and reprinted often. The date seal on each sheet gives its month of publication. This is the largest clean open impression of the design the Met holds. Impression variance is real — printings differ in wiping and fading — and choosing the finest openly held impression is the curatorial act.
