One Hundred Famous Views of Edo

Plum Garden at Kamata

Kamata no umezono

Utagawa Hiroshige · 1857, 2nd month

What it is

Plum trees bloom in the garden at Kamata, visitors stroll beneath them, and a palanquin waits by the fence.

Why it matters

Hiroshige sets a quiet outing among the blossom, with the waiting palanquin as the only sign of the road back.

What to notice

The blossom is printed in small white and pink dots across dark branches.

A garden visit is measured by the people waiting for you.

Impression note. Published 1856–59 in the vertical format Hiroshige had first used for his Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces, and reprinted often. The date seal on each sheet gives its month of publication. This is the largest clean open impression of the design the Met holds. Impression variance is real — printings differ in wiping and fading — and choosing the finest openly held impression is the curatorial act.
