One Hundred Famous Views of Edo

Moon-Viewing Point

月の岬 · Tsuki no misaki

Utagawa Hiroshige · 1857, 8th month

What it is

A room set for an evening open onto Edo Bay at Tsuki no Misaki: the moon over the water and a line of geese crossing it.

Why it matters

Hiroshige shows the view from inside, the way his visitors would have had it, with the room itself as the frame.

What to notice

The edge of the room frames the bay, and the moon sits in the open space beyond.

The best view is from a seat.

Impression note. Published 1856–59 in the vertical format Hiroshige had first used for his Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces, and reprinted often. The date seal on each sheet gives its month of publication. This is the largest clean open impression of the design the Met holds. Impression variance is real — printings differ in wiping and fading — and choosing the finest openly held impression is the curatorial act.
