1876–1950
Yoshida Hiroshi吉田博
A mountaineer and a painter in oils before he was a printmaker, Yoshida came to the woodblock in mid-life and brought Western light with him. His sailing boats and alpine ranges glow with an atmosphere the old masters never sought — the same block printed in dawn, noon, and dusk variants. His pre-1931 designs, cleared by publication year, are collected here.
The workshop
After a start with Watanabe, Yoshida built his own workshop in 1925 and supervised every stage himself — signing finished impressions in pencil, in English, as a painter signs a canvas. He printed with a mountaineer’s patience: some designs took dozens of impressions per sheet.
